Statue Of Liberty


Liberty Enlightening the World or the Statue of Liberty stands at the Liberty Island, New York. It was a gift from France to the United States in 1886, on its first centennial of independence. The statue is also known as Lady Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty symbolises liberty from oppression and tyranny. It is the statue of a woman in a robe, holding a torch burning with the light of freedom. She is adorned with a diadem with seven-spikes and holds a stone tablet in her left hand. The tablet bears the words ’JULY lV MDCCLXXVI' (4 July 1776), the date of American independence. Broken chains
lie at Lady Liberty’s feet symbolising freedom from the reign of terror and cruelty.

Designers


Lady Liberty was designed by a French sculptor, Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi.1n 1871, Bartholdi chose Liberty Island as the site of the monument during his trip to the United States.The internal structure of the statue was designed by Gustave Eiifel, the designer of the famous Eiffel Tower. Eiffel made the internal framework of steel and covered it with copper sheets.

The statue


The Statue of Liberty is one of the largest statues in the world.The statue stands on a pedestal.The height of the statue from the ground to the tip of the torch is 93.5 m.The height of just the statu is 46 m. The statue weighs about 226 tons. The torch of the statue has 16 powerful lamps arranged around the rim. The lamps glow brightly at night.


Funds


The construction of the statue began in 1875 in Paris. The funds required for the construction of the statue were raised from public donations and by hosting various forms of popular public shows. A charitable lottery was also used to raise the funds required.The pedestal of the statue was built in America. Its construction started in 1884 and was completed in 1886. The United States too raised the required money for the construction of the pedestal in a similar way by organising public shows and auctions.


Visit to the statue


The Statue of Liberty can be visited by ferry from Manhattan Island. Visitors can reach the pedestal by climbing 189 stairs. The observation area in the crown has a platform with 25 windows. The platform can hold around 20 people at a time. Visitors are not allowed to visit the torch area.


The pedestal


The pedestal is the base on which the statue stands. It is a mass of concrete made with steel beams covered with granite. The pedestal starts from the walls of a star-shaped fort. The fort was built in 1806 for the defence of New York from naval attacks. The total height of the pedestal and the fort is 47 m. The pedestal was designed by an architect, Richard Morris Hunt, of the United States.

Dedication


The people of France presented the statue to the people of United States to commemorate the centennial of US independence.The statue was disassembled into 214 pieces and packed in wooden crates and shipped to the United States. It was assembled there and was placed on the pedestal, where it stands now. The statue was
officially dedicated by President Grover Clevelabd in New York City on 28 October 1886.
