The great tower was not built at one go. Construction began with the base of the tower and the first foundation stones of marble and lime were set down in 1173. During the first stage, the first three floors were built. In 1178, when Pisa was at war, the construction was stopped. In 1275, construction of the next three Hoors was resumed again.'Ihe construction was once again halted until 1319.The final two floors were added between 1319 and 1350.

Architect

The architect of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a subject of controversy. Nowhere in the building and in history is the name of the architect recorded. According to the historian Giorgio Vasari, the architect of the tower was Bonanno Pisano. According to modern historians, Diotisalvi was the architect of the tower. Diotisalvi was the architect of the Baptistery and there are similarities in the structure of the Baptistery and the Tower of Pisa. Some historians have attributed the design to Biduino. The ornamentation of the tower at the base reveals noteworthy similarities with some of Biduino’s most well-known work.

Leon

The lean of the Leaning Tower is because of the weak foundation and unstable subsoil. The site of the
tower was a large river delta in the past. The architects and builders of the tower were, however, unaware of this fact. They did not know that the soil was a mixture of sand, clay, and water, which was unsuitable for large buildings. The lean was noticed for the first time during the construction of the third floor in 1178. During the construction of the next three floors, the architects tried to adjust the lean. This gave the tower a slight banana shape and the tower began leaning towards the south in 1272. Architects tried to correct the angle towards the north by adding four steps on the north side and six steps on the south side at the base of the bell tower. This, however, gave the tower a slight S-shape.Today, the tower leans about 55‘ towards the south.
