Television


A Television is a device that electronically transmits moving pictures and sounds over a distance. It is one of the most important means of communication. The word ‘television’ means ‘far sight’. It is. derived from the Greek word tele which means ‘far’ and a Latin word vision which means ‘sight’.

Televisions bring pictures and sounds to homes from around the world. These images are relayed by communication satellites in the form of radio waves. Television sets have aerials that receive the waves and change them into moving pictures and sounds.

Web TV


Web TV technology was invented in 1996. The first web TV sets were produced by Diba Inc. and Zenith Electronics. Web TV is commonly used to access the Internet through television sets. It provides a set top box that connects to the television and the telephone line. The web TV network was bought by Microsoft in 1997.

Vladimir Kosmich Zworykin


Vladimir Kosmich was a Russian-American inventor. He was a pioneer of television technology. In 1923, he invented the iconoscope, which was a tube for television transmission. He invented the cathode ray tube, called the kinescope, in 1929. The kinescope is used for transmission in televisions. Zworykin was also instrumental in the development of charge storage-type tubes, infrared image tubes, and the electron microscope.

John Logie Baird


John Logie Baird was a Scottish engineer and entrepreneur. He was the first to conceive the idea of electronic television. Using a mechanical television, Baird carried out the first transmission: of objects in motion in 1924. He held his first public demonstration of television in London in March 1925. He also demonstrated the first colour television m 1928. Baird s trans-Atlantic transmission of the image of a human face in 1928 is an important milestone in the history of broadcasting. The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) started broadcasting television on the Baird 30-line system in 1929.


Philo Taylor Farnsworth


Philo Taylor Farnsworth is generally acknowledged as the father of electronic television. He conceived the idea of television at the age of 14. He is the inventor of the first complete electronic television system. He was the first person to make a working electronic image pickup device or the video camera tube and to transmit sign images using cathode ray tubes in 1927.

Liquid crystal display (LCD)


Liquid crystal display (LCD) ‘ televisions use LCD technology for their visual output. LCD televisions are low-power flat-panel display televisions made up of liquid crystals. There are various types of LCD televisions. Some LCD can also be used as computer monitors.


High-definition television


High-definition television (HDTV) is a digital television broadcasting system. It has a high resolution and is broadcast digitally. It was introduced in the 19903. in the United States.


Internet protocol television


Internet protocol television (IPTV) uses Internet protocol over a network infrastructure. It does not use cables or traditional broadcast formats but the viewer receives it through the computer network infrastructure.
